Urbanition

We were pleased to be included in the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery exhibition Urbanition, which looked at urban systems through the eyes of artists from San Francisco and Sydney. Participating artists were asked to create conceptual projects to make our cities more humane, green and livable. As part of the SFAC’s “Sister City Biennial” program, the exhibition included artists from both the United States and Australia, including Sergio De La Torre (US), Amy Balkin (US) and Chris Fox (AU).

Our contribution was You are bART, a conceptual exploration of the capability of BART, the regional transit system, to become a robust public space by hosting a variety of programming and services to serve the broad and diverse populations that use the system on a regular basis. The selection of BART as our subject was topical, as BART was in the process of selecting new cars with newly-designed interiors around the time of Urbanition. Why not have a TED talk on the train? Or a gym car?

After a run in San Francisco, the show then moved to Carriageworks, a gallery and project space in Sydney, Australia.

You are bART is a Rebar project.
